10,000m
Road Elimination Junior Women:
The evening temperatures started
to drop as called approximately
30 young women were called, according
to their counties, to the start
line for a grueling 25 laps.
Catherine
Peñan of Chile took early
points behind Carolina Upegui
who ultimately took the 1st
place..
9
laps left and Guo Dan of Chinese
Taipei crossed the finish line
to take a point. With 8 laps
to go 21 women were still left
in the race. 5 laps to go and
Briana Kramer of the United
States made a break-away which
ultimately saw her gain the
3rd place position on the podium,
but with only 3 laps to go the
pack had wound Briana back in.
The
two Colombian skaters were strong
together in the last few laps,
and it was Carolina Upegui #
70 of Colombia who took gold.
Catherine Peñan # 47
continuing a strong showing
from Chile and Briana Kramer
# 371 of the US who had amassed
sufficient points for the bronze
medal
10,000m Road Elimination
Junior Men:
Lining
up over 30 young men took some
time, called individually to
the start line, one-by-one,
according to their country.
After a brief explanation of
the rules (how many points certain
laps would be worth and when
eliminations would occur), given
in English, Spanish, Korean
and suddenly the race had started.
An explosion of bodies heading
off the start line and around
the first of many corners.
1
lap down saw the two New Zealanders,
keen to up keep their countries
great results at this world
competition, made a break, closely
followed by the US and Chile.
It
was worth the effort as Chile
took a point with 21 laps to
go. Argentina, always strong
in long races, closes the gap
and the pack-followed suit.
Colombia and Italy mad an 8m
gap on the pack. The 2 New Zealanders
make a break again, with some
tussling in the corner with
the young skater France.
14
laps to go and the Korean skater
takes the lead. The crowd jumped
to their feet and cheered wildly.
With
14 to go, the Netherlands and
the US make a break # 238 of
Korea dug-deep and took off
f the pack. He kept the lead,
amassing points until 7 laps
wer left and the pack, as it
does, ate him up.
Chile
in the lead with 3 to go was
also eaten by the pack
Nicolas
Zamudio # 91 of Colombia was
able to gain sufficient points
to take the gold medal, # 272
from New Zealand , young Daniel
Nation took silver and from
Chile # 45 Rolando Ossandon
took bronze.
10,000
elimination points Senior ladies:
The
race took it's course on the
less experienced skaters. Skating
a senior women's 1000m is like
going to war, without weapons.
There
is no "excuse-me"
or "please", just
determination and forces to
be reckoned with. Some intimidation
on the start line, and they
are off. With 8 laps to go,
the mainly Korean crowd was
up on their feet to cheer for
Hyo Sook Woo
# 257 of Korea who had led several
laps after a break away. With
her legs and lungs burning she
continued until she could dig
no deeper. The pack had caught
her and one-by-one they passed
her. The crowed tried to lift
her for one more lap, stamping
their feet and shouting for
her to go faster, Hyo Sook Woo
with her hands on her legs to
help her move them, gave all
she had tonight and moved gently
into the pack. Liana Holguin
# 79 of Colombia raced for 3rd
place and took the bronze medal,
Silvina Posada # 8 of Ardintina
showed the depth of skaters
that Argentina has again. Silvina
enough points to grab the gold.
Well done to her and special
appreciation from the crowd
to the silver medallist, Hyo
Sook Woo
10,000
elimination points Senior Men.
With
only one lap down the skater
from South Africa took the lead.
It must have been invigorating
for this young skater to be
out in front of a large pack
on such an exciting night of
racing.
The
previous races tonight had been
strangely missing the usual
warnings anouncments, but not
so in the senior men's race.
A
few warnings were given during
this race, which always makes
it more exciting, as we wonder
who might be eliminated due
to expulsion from the race by
disqualification rather than
elimination by being last to
pass the finish line on the
bell lap.
With
only 6 laps to go both Korea
and Colombia tried to make a
break away. At this time Joey
Mantia was possibly not fully
aware his race had not been
run and he had a real chance
of taking home the gold. The
Aussies made several moves together,
but were unable to make the
final points. Young Nelson Garzon
of Colombia was impressive and
is certainly a name to watch
for in upcoming distance races.
Tonight he was unable to make
the podium. Yan Guyader of France
was also turning heads with
interest; he was among the top
men taking points and again
is worthy of a mention.
Shane
Dobbin of New Zealand, always
worth 'putting money on' in
a distance race, especially
as New Zealand is on such a
good-roll at this years championships
was not able to gain sufficient
points to make a podium finish
tonight.
But
# 251 of Korea Yoo Jong Nam,
who had also broken away from
the pack and laps after lap
made the crowd come to their
feet. Bring smiles to all their
faces and given them joy in
his home-town race. Yoo Jong
Nam took a well-earned bronze.
The team from Chile would again
have reason to celebrate with
# 51, Jorge Reyes taking the
silver medal. |
